Presentation of Pirinexus 2019, the gravel event of the Pyrenees

29-01-2019

The Pirinexus, the gravel event of the Pyrenees, returns for yet another year on the back of five previous editions, beginning its 2019 journey. This year the event will take place on Saturday 22 June.

As another new feature, this year the event will also go in the opposite direction to the usual route, departing from Girona in the direction of the Costa Brava and returning from the north, after crossing the French border at the Coll d'Ares mountain pass. 50% of the route is on dirt tracks and 50% on asphalt, most of which are very quiet B-roads.

Vies Verdes

For yet another year, the Vies Verdes brand is the event’s sponsor, the perfect brand to promote these types of route networks that run through calm and idyllic places on adapted and completely safe pathways, such as Pirinexus itself. The course also travels along greenways left behind from old narrow-gauge railways, among other paths that have been restored and are now signposted and suitable for enjoying by bicycle all over the Girona region, a true cycling paradise.

The PIRINEXUS 360 Challenge is a personal non-stop circular challenge with a distance of 340 km along the route known as PIRINEXUS. Participants start the day at sunrise and have until 12 a.m. to complete a route that takes in all types of terrain, asphalt roads, lots of track and some urban segments. All types of bicycles are welcome, although gravel or cyclo-cross bicycles are perhaps the most appropriate. Road bikes with 28' (preferably) or 25' tyres, or mountain bikes with 29' smooth tyres, and heavy-duty road bikes with a wheel arch wide enough to fit knobbly tyres and a width of 28 mm may also be used, bearing in mind that the chosen bicycle cannot be changed during the entire route.

Those who manage to arrive in Girona before midnight will receive the prized ‘finisher’ trophy, which will remind them of this glorious day. Those who arrive in Girona before sunset (9.30 p.m.) will also receive a special gift. Participants may only be considered a ‘finisher’ if they complete the entire route, without exception, with proof in their road book that they have passed through all the bike checkpoints.
